UN releases AI governance guide for cities
The United Nations launched a new toolbox yesterday in Barcelona to help city officials maintain human control over artificial intelligence in public services.
The United for Smart Sustainable Cities toolbox provides mayors and policymakers with practical guidance on implementing artificial intelligence in urban environments. It addresses the growing use of algorithms and chatbots in city administration, which can introduce risks related to bias, privacy, and human rights.
The resource establishes four core rules for urban technological projects. It advises officials to prioritize the urban problem over technology, maintain meaningful human control, apply strict safeguards, and acknowledge that avoiding artificial intelligence can be a responsible choice.
Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union Doreen Bogdan-Martin stated that the toolbox helps officials turn responsible principles into reliable public services. Executive Director of UN-Habitat Anacláudia Rossbach noted that digital innovation must address the needs of underserved communities while ensuring that residents meaningfully participate in shaping decisions.
The launch at the Smart City Expo World Congress marks the 10th anniversary of the global initiative. Coordinated by three United Nations agencies and supported by 19 other programs, the initiative also released several publications covering urban governance and digital infrastructure security.
