Nokia selected by NASA to build first ever cellular network on the Moon

Nokia has announced further details after being named by NASA as a partner to advance “Tipping Point” technologies for the Moon, deploying the first LTE/4G communications system in space and helping pave the way towards sustainable human presence on the lunar surface.

Nokia Bell Labs’ pioneering innovations will be used to build and deploy the first ultra-compact, low-power, space-hardened, end-to-end LTE solution on the lunar surface in late 2022. Nokia is partnering with Intuitive Machines for this mission to integrate this groundbreaking network into their lunar lander and deliver it to the lunar surface. The network will self-configure upon deployment and establish the first LTE communications system on the Moon.

Mixed Reality Surgery World Tour - A new step forward in medical innovation

15 surgeons from 13 different countries have undertaken 13 mixed reality orthopedic operations as part of a 24-hour event. The surgeons virtually collaborated using Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist, and were led by Professor Thomas Grégory of the Avicenne AP-HP Hospital, France.

Professor Grégory and his team led all 13 mixed reality surgeries from the Avicenne AP-HP Hospital. From there, the surgery toured a number of countries, including: France, India, UAE, South Africa, Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Morocco, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, USA, UK.

ABB robots accelerate COVID-19 testing in Singapore

As part of Singapore’s efforts to enhance its nation-wide COVID-19 testing capabilities, ABB’s high-precision robots have been deployed in a new automated laboratory system, known as the Rapid Automated Volume Enhancer (RAVE).

The system automates some of the manual steps usually required in sample processing. Two sets of RAVE and associated equipment can process an industry-topping throughput of close to 4,000 samples a day. RAVE also reduces test contamination and infection risks for laboratory workers.

Estonian researchers develop deep learning method to increase cancer knowledge

Using approximately 2.6 million microscopy images of canine kidney cells, members of an international research group, containing contributors from Estonia and Russia have built and trained a deep learning model to better understand how cells grow and divide. This research opens a novel way to identify more quickly and more easily the cell cycle ‘clock’ for every cell that is essential to understand diseases like cancer. The methods and results of their work have now been published in the journal Molecular Systems Biology.

ABB to power the world’s largest diamond recovery vessel for De Beers

ABB wins contract from Damen Shipyards Group to deliver an advanced power system for the world’s first custom-built diamond recovery vessel.

ABB will supply an integrated power system package that will ensure the world’s largest and most technologically advanced diamond recovery vessel meets exceptional safety, efficiency and availability requirements. The vessel is being built by Damen at Damen Shipyards Mangalia on the Black Sea in Romania. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.

Scandinavian startups receiving in total up to 700 000 euros in funding

89 startups from across Europe of which 14 are based in Scandinavia are selected for support to accelerate the development of promising health solutions.
